SSD vs HDD: The One Upgrade That Makes an Old Computer Feel New

If your computer takes five minutes to start up and freezes every time you open more than two programs, the problem might not be its age. It is probably its hard drive, and swapping it is the single best value upgrade in computing.

The two types of drive, explained simply

Older computers store everything on a hard disk drive (HDD). Picture a tiny record player inside your computer: a spinning metal platter with a mechanical arm that physically moves to find your files. It works, but it is slow, fragile, and gets slower as it ages.

A solid-state drive (SSD) has no moving parts at all. It is more like a giant version of the memory chip in a USB stick. No spinning, no searching, no waiting.

What the difference feels like

This is not a small improvement. It is a transformation:

We regularly hear “it is faster than when it was new” from customers after an SSD swap, and it is true. Your original hard drive was the bottleneck all along.

But is my computer worth upgrading?

Fair question. Here is our honest rule of thumb: if your computer is less than about 10 years old and otherwise works, an SSD upgrade is usually excellent value. The processor and memory in a five- or six-year-old machine are still perfectly fine for email, browsing, photos, and documents.

If the machine has other serious faults, a cracked screen, or a motherboard on the way out, we will tell you to put the money toward a replacement instead.

What about all my stuff?

Everything moves across. We clone your existing drive onto the new SSD, so your files, photos, programs, and settings all end up exactly where they were. The only difference is speed.

The cost question

An SSD upgrade, parts and labour included, typically costs a fraction of a new computer. For a machine that is otherwise healthy, it is hard to beat for value.
