Setting Up a Safe Computer or Tablet for the Grandkids

The grandkids are visiting more often, or they have their first device, and someone needs to make sure it is safe without wrapping them in digital cotton wool. Whether it is a hand-me-down iPad, a new laptop for school, or the family computer they use at your place, here is how to set it up properly.

Start with separate accounts, always

The golden rule: kids get their own account, never yours. On the family computer, create a standard (non-administrator) user account for them. On their own device, set it up under your family management rather than as a fully independent adult account.

Why it matters: with their own account they cannot install things without approval, cannot accidentally delete your files, and cannot wander into your email or banking. And the parental controls only work on child accounts anyway.

Turn on the built-in family controls

Every platform has free parental controls built in now:

You do not need paid software for the basics. The built-in tools cover web filtering, time limits, app approvals, and purchase blocking.

The purchases conversation

Game and app purchases deserve special attention. Require approval for every purchase (all the family tools above can do this), and do not save your card details on a device kids use. “Nanna, the game charged $400” is a phone call nobody wants.

Teaching beats blocking

Filters catch most things, but the internet is infinite and kids are resourceful. The conversations matter more than the software:

Physical setup matters too

Keep devices in shared spaces where possible, charge them outside bedrooms overnight (kills both late-night scrolling and the fire risk of charging under pillows), and set downtime hours so the device sleeps when they should.

Keep it updated

Kid devices get ignored for months then mysteriously misbehave. Enable automatic updates for the operating system and apps so security fixes install themselves.

For the device at your place

If grandkids use your computer when visiting, a guest or child account takes five minutes to set up and protects both of you. They get a safe sandbox; your files stay untouched no matter what gets clicked.
