It can be hard to keep up with technology, and scammers rely on that to trick us. Here is a simple guide to the three most common calls and messages going around our area right now.
1. The “NBN Upgrade” Call
A caller says they are from NBN or Telstra. They claim you must pay a fee to upgrade your internet, or they will disconnect you immediately.
Simple Truth: NBN does not call people at home. They will never ask you for money to upgrade the network. If someone asks for a payment, just hang up.
2. The “Computer Virus” Call
Someone calls claiming to be from Microsoft. They say your computer is infected and they need to “log in” remotely to fix it.
Simple Truth: Microsoft will never call you to fix your computer. These callers want to get into your bank account. Never let a stranger control your computer.
3. The “Surprise Refund” Message
You get a text or email saying you are owed money (a refund) or have a missed parcel, and you must click a link to claim it.
Simple Truth: If it looks too good to be true, it is. These links are traps. Do not click them.
The Golden Rule: If a call feels urgent or rude, hang up. It is not rude to protect yourself. Take a breath, make a cup of tea, and call a family member or a trusted local expert to check for you.
